Role Summary

We are seeking an experienced Upstream Production Manager to lead our upstream operations team. This critical role involves overseeing the production processes, quality control (QC), and team management, ensuring the seamless operation of upstream bioprocessing activities. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in biopharma production, expertise in managing upstream processes, and proven leadership skills. A PMP certification is required to ensure project management excellence.

Key Responsibilities

As an Upstream Production Manager, you will be assigned to a wide range of responsibilities, which includes:

1. Production Oversight and Management

  • Lead the end-to-end upstream production processes, including raw material preparation, media formulation and cell culture for plant- and algae-based protein production.
  • Develop and implement robust production schedules, ensuring all deliverables align with project deadlines and quality standards.
  • Oversee the installation, calibration, and maintenance of upstream equipment to maintain operational efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot process deviations and ensure corrective actions are implemented effectively to minimize downtime.

2. Quality Assurance and Compliance

  • Develop and adhere to a harvesting schedule that maximizes yield and maintains the quality of the biomass.
  • Implement and refine harvesting techniques to ensure efficient collection with minimal loss and contamination.
  • Oversee the drying and grinding processes, ensuring the biomass is processed under optimal conditions.
  • Ensure harvested biomass is stored correctly to maintain quality and prevent spoilage.
 

3. Process Development and Optimization

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance process efficiency, reduce costs, and increase scalability.
  • Collaborate with the R&D team to transition lab-scale processes into production-scale operations seamlessly.
  • Implement statistical process control (SPC) and other data-driven approaches to monitor and optimize bioprocess performance.
  • Evaluate and adopt new technologies and methodologies to improve upstream operations.
 

4. Leadership and Team Management

  • Manage, mentor, and motivate a multidisciplinary team of technicians, engineers, and operators to achieve production goals.
  • Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and innovation within the team.
  • Conduct performance reviews, identify training needs, and provide professional development opportunities to team members.
  • Lead cross-functional meetings to align upstream production with other departments, including downstream processing, QC, and supply chain
 

5. Project Management

  • Use PMP (Project Management Professional) methodologies to plan, monitor, and execute upstream production projects.
  • Develop detailed project timelines, budgets, and resource allocation plans to meet organizational goals.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and presentations for senior management and stakeholders.
  • Anticipate and mitigate risks associated with upstream production processes.
 

6. Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance

  • Develop and enforce strict safety protocols for all production activities, ensuring a safe working environment.
  • Conduct regular safety training and risk assessments to prevent workplace incidents.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and minimize the ecological impact of upstream production activities.

Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology, Biochemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or related fields (Master’s or PhD preferred).
    • Advanced certifications in biopharma production or quality assurance are an advantage.
  • Experience:
    • 7+ years of experience in upstream production, with at least 3 years in a managerial position.
    • Demonstrated experience in biopharma production, fermentation processes, and QC.
    • Proven expertise in GMP-compliant production environments and regulatory standards.
  • Certifications:
    • PMP (Project Management Professional) certification is required.
    • HACCP or Lean Six Sigma certification is a plus.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Deep knowledge of fermentation systems, bioreactors, and media preparation techniques.
    • Proficiency in process validation, scale-up methodologies, and bioprocess analytical techniques.
    • Familiarity with advanced software tools for process monitoring and statistical analysis (e.g., DOE, SCADA, JMP).
  • Soft Skills:
    • Exceptional leadership and team management abilities.
    • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive mindset for continuous improvement.
    • Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet tight deadlines.
    • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment.
